Along the way I noticed that I had become a landscape painter. I was continually drawn to pastoral scenes and natural images. Nature is a place that I have always felt welcomed and at home – it’s a nurturing space, a soul place that can take me from the chaos of everyday life and offer hope. Nature reminds me that beauty exists, that there is more to life than war, injustice and poverty; that goodness is still rampant on the face of the earth. Nature is a place where I can daily watch the unfolding of miracles and be present to the awesomeness of mystery. It’s where I observe the color and light and texture that informs and guides my painting. Painting the landscape, for me, is a way to be present to the unchanging truth of goodness and a means of expressing gratitude that our world is fertile and pregnant with life and beauty and hope. Since a recent move to Boston I have been working mostly in pastels. They capture the softness and yet the depth of the landscape. The layering of colors along with the play between dark and light, allows these soft, chalk like sticks to create a variety of moods and feelings that speak in many voices. |
