“Visions Abroad”

While walking the back roads, passing brilliant yellow rape seed fields, and the blue sky filled coastal paths of Brittany, France, I discovered cows. When I stopped to observe them, they trotted over to check on me. Sniffing, drooling, snorting, and nudging each other to find out what I was, I tried sketch them as fast as I could. I was intrigued by the fur patterns that reminded me maps.

Always I try to determine the technique to best interpret my drawings. The line transfer monotype seemed the most direct and appropriate method for these cows. The immediacy of the moment seems to be the most important part of my experience that I want to convey to the viewer.

The first “pull” or transfer is drawn on the back of the printmaking paper that is placed on a field of color. The second print is transferred with the printing plate having been pulled through the printing press. Hence the residue of ink is pressed into the paper. The definition of a monotype is an inked image transferred to paper once.
