"Old paint on canvas, as it ages, sometimes becomes transparent.
When that happens it is possible, in some pictures, to see the original
lines: a tree will show through a woman's dress, a child makes way for
a dog, a large boat is no longer on an open sea. That is called pentimento
because the painter "repented," changed her mind. Perhaps it
would be as well to say that the old conception, replaced by a later choice,
is a way of seeing and then seeing again." (A passage from Pentimento
by Lillian Hellman)
Using oils and acrylics,
inks, and pastels, Sirarpi draws, scrawls, scrapes, and paints on canvas
and wood surfaces that are rich in layers of handmade and recycled papers,
fabric, wood powder, sand, and other natural materials. These compositions
celebrate or reinvent a world of inner apprehension and appreciation for
the modulations wrought over time. Her suggestive abstract figurative
work springs from meditations on nature, or childhood memories distilled
into a single dramatic moment. In several of her paintings, an abstracted
female figure prevails within an abiding sense of solitude.
Sirarpi's works have
the musicality of Kandinsky and the inwardness of Klee; their energetic
surfaces imply an ongoing tension between freedom and containment. Informed
by readings in Thoreau, her response edges the viewer closer to that place
where chaos erupts into clarity.
Sirarpi holds undergraduate
and graduate degrees in biomedical and systems engineering from Boston
University, and a degree from the Academy for Fine Arts, "The Etage,"
in Berlin, Germany, where she studied painting, stage, and theatre design.
In Berlin, where she lived for thirteen years, Sirarpi worked with such
international artists as director/stage designer Andrej Woron, environmental
artist Peter Erskine, and among others Milan Knizak, Pauline Disson, Jan
Hendrikse, Klaus Denhardt and Tim Harney.
Sirarpi has exhibited
her work, including installations, in Germany and USA. She lives and works
in Lexington, Massachusetts.
