The spontaneity of watercolor has always lent itself to my love of working
outdoors. Combining the best of both possible choices I am able to focus
on capturing the moment. The challenge of working in every variety of
possible weather conditions or seasons is exhilarating. Each day’s
work comes with its own unique problems to solve. From paint freezing
on the surface of 140lb. Arches cold press paper, to insects or windblown
sand and twigs or raindrops, all assisting with visual texture in the
final piece of work. This is the most immediate way for me to experience
the moment. I find myself becoming completely absorbed in the transitory
shifts of light, air, wind, sand and beach flies. My painting becomes
the record of my experience of being there. If I have succeeded, I am
brought back to that moment.
I work with Winsor Newton paint and use a variety of cold press paper.
In the field I use an easel and work vertically, with heavy water jugs,
usually 2-liter soda bottles, to stabilize the easel. If wind becomes
a problem, I just move to the ground to cut down on resistance. When temperatures
drop below 32 degrees I put hot baked potatoes in my pockets. They’re
good for up to 40 minutes of warmth and then provide vitamin c and about
ninety calories of energy.
I began taking art lessons as a child in the second grade on Saturday
mornings. This continued through high school at Massachusetts College
of Art. I attended Emmanuel College in Boston, and majored in art. I graduated
in 1967 and began teaching art in the Waltham Public Schools, where I
am currently the Art Director. My painting is done regularly on weekends
and school vacation weeks during the year, and during the summer, wherever
my travels take me. For the past three years I have been doing most of
my work along the coast of Massachusetts, from Rockport and Gloucester
in the north, to the beaches and tidal flats of Cape Cod. This most recent
summer brought me back to Idaho to visit relocated friends. While out
west, I took advantage of an opportunity to paint along the coast of Washington
and the coast of San Juan Island.
