The creation of a piece of art is a mysterious process. My journey to a finished painting is full of surprise, frustration, and satisfaction, with hopefully, a beautiful conclusion. My purpose is to capture lovely moments in the natural world. I do my best when I am happy, secure and in tune with nature. I try to create paintings that impart those feelings to the viewer. I choose to paint with oil, acrylic or egg tempera according to the effects attainable with each media.

I find beauty in the quotidian. Most everyday of the year my poodle, Chloe, and I walk local paths. As she hunts the world with her nose I do the same with my eyes. My memory of the landscape, often assisted with a snapshot, is used as a basis for a composition. My goal with landscape painting is to leave the extraneous behind and distill the most interesting parts of a landscape sometimes to the edge of abstraction.

It doesn’t feel quite right to paint at home the scenery I see while traveling. I earn the right to capture a scene on canvas with repetitive viewing. However, travel photos become a basis for paintings of imagined worlds. In fantasy paintings I relish using the detail I purposely leave out of local landscapes. The use of vibrant color is a common feature of both fantasy and landscape paintings.

Medical illustrations executed with technical pen and ink have been my bread and butter for thirty two years. I enjoy collaborating with physicians, writers and editors. The medical knowledge and accuracy required is a different but enjoyable challenge compared to painting. I have contributed to over fifty medical textbooks and illustrated hundreds of words in the American Heritage Dictionary series.
