When I was a small child I used to do a funny thing while I was daydreaming. I would blur my eyes ever so slightly and collect the images that came into view all around me. It softened edges, deleted details, simplified shapes and colors, light, shadows—and pleased me greatly. I never spoke about this and certainly did not know I was “painting.” I knew I could never be bored as long as I could see. I was creating compositions and had begun to do an exercise that I do now each time I paint.

When I begin a painting, pencil or ink sketch I soften the edges in my vision as I begin to select the elements and choose the dimensions to form my composition. I loosely and quickly sketch to begin because spontaneity often holds the key to a fresh, successful piece. I try to stay inside this elusive moment. I often leave the charcoal marks from my initial sketch under the paint as part of my finished work, and add charcoal lines in places where I want to make more of a statement. The lines add a graphic quality and represent the chronology and structure of my piece.

There is a moment where I am one with the subject matter I am painting and the immediacy of the brush stroke. This moment is the epitome of my painting experience. My goal is to capture this brief and elevated moment and carry it to the finished piece.

Painting is my most immediate and honest form of expression and my goal is to convey to myself and my viewers the excitement found in light, shade, form and color that lands on planes, surfaces and objects found in my everyday world.

My career as a graphic designer allows me to use the technology of computer graphics to aide me in experimenting with photographic resources used as a source of some of my paintings.
