I was born and raised a violinist. All my life an inner source has guided my playing the violin. I love the magical world created by the abstracted form of music.

Formal concerns of technique and interpretation are always in partnership with this inner source. I began painting at a time of personal upheaval. I needed a visible remainder of recollection in addition to these created sound pictures. My inner source found a new means of expression by making pictures with paint and collage. The connections between art and music continue to inspire me. My inner eye sees the beauty and essences that underlie surface appearance. I work to record the symbolically potent images appearing in my life.

Glimmers of memory layer upon present life and literal reality. When I work my innerstanding merges with formal considerations creating an alchemical process. The adventure in this process gives me great joy. This is why I paint.

Siri Smedvig grew up in an artistic, musical Scandinavian family in Seattle Washington. Her parents had a keen appreciation for the relationship between the arts so while the emphasis was on music (violin, piano and composing) Siri also studied ballet, ice-skating, drama and art. Childhood summers were spent traveling through Europe seeing the art and architecture.

After performing and studying at Tanglewood Music Center (five summers) Siri moved east to attend Harvard University. Majoring in English and American literature, Siri played with the Boston Pops and many other Boston freelance orchestras while studying violin with Joseph Silverstein. Falling in love with literature especially poetry, writing became a passion as well as music and art.

Graduating from Harvard she won the McCord Prize for Artistic Excellence and moved to New York City. Performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with the American Symphony, Siri enjoyed the rich culture of art and music in NYC. Marrying she moved abroad for several years, performing violin recitals and playing chamber music. She also studied the art of dressage with Ingrid Lilling a Swedish Equestrian during this time. Moving back to New England brought many changes---the birth of her daughter Iman and a divorce.

It was at this time Siri began to draw and paint intensely. She has studied art with Albert Alcalay, Linda Beaumont, Timothy Harney, Russell Roberts, Joseph Wheelwright and Makoto Yabe. Siri is currently a member and showing her work at the Depot Square Gallery in Lexington. She has also shown her work at the Clark Gallery in Lincoln and the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. She is a member and has shown her work in numerous juried shows at the Concord Art Association, and the Cambridge Art Association. She has had a solo show at the Concord Library and has shown at the First Parish Gallery and the Blanchard Trust Gallery at the Emerson Umbrella. She has won numerous awards from juried shows. Siri now lives with her daughter and a menagerie of animals on a farm in Concord Massachusetts where she works in many mediums and performs and teaches violin.
